Château de Meursault - Pommard 1er Clos des Epenots
Dating back to the 11th Century, The Château de Meursault estate comprises 60 hectares of vines, all situated in the Côte de Beaune. The estate changed hands In 2012, bringing a brand new vision and approach under the supervision of Managing Director Stéphane Follin-Arbelet. The domaine is now certified organic. The winemaking is respectful to terroir, new oak ranges from 25-40% and the wines are aged for 15-18 months in the magnificent and impressive Cistercian vaulted cellars, which date back to the 12th, 14th and 16th centuries, beneath the Château. All the wines are estate grown as the Château de Meursault does not source any juice/wines from the negoce trade. The Château de Meursault also hosts the Paulée de Meursault on the Monday after the Hospices de Beaune sale every year, with the cuvérie being cleared of vats and vintage paraphernalia in order to lay tables for lunch for 600 people.8
Organic. Epenots refers to the brushwood and thorny bushes that used to thrive freely, before the land was turned to vineyards. 100% pinot noir. Traditional Burgundy vinification. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels (40% new).
Though often regarded as the next in line after Rugiens for supremacy in Pommard, les Epenots offers a more elegant framework. Elegant and aromatic nose revealing notes of fleshy boysenberry, strawberry with hints of violet and spices. The palate is elegant with a beautiful finesse of the grain as well as precision. Good length and beautiful persistence.
