Stretching over a tiny 9 hectares, just outside Montalcino, on high elevation and north facing vineyards, Il Marroneto is owned by father/son Alessandro and Iacopo Mori. The winery gets its name from the old house, Il
Marroneto, dating back to 1247. The house belonged to the small now desecrated church, Madonna delle Grazie, and was used to store and dry chestnuts to make flour for bread. This unique site sits at 400 meters of altitude in a cooler, steeply sloped microclimate with soils of pebble rich limestone and galestro that give wines of precision, finesse and elegance.

Steadfastly old school in their production methods, with aging in large French and Slavonian oak casks, Il Marroneto’s Brunellos are built to last, with tannins that need some time to soften. Patience is rewarded, however, with wines that have sophisticated fruit profiles, real elegance and a brightness that reflects the vineyards’ cooler location north of the town.

Organic. 100% Sangiovese. Blend from three different north facing vineyards. The soils are a mix of alluvial sediments, sand, limestone and the Tuscan galestro (a schistous & clayed stone). Vinified with natural ferments, no fining and no filtration. A 48-hour maceration with regular pump-overs occurs after a partial destemming. No temperature control is used during fermentation. Aged in large botte for three to four years. The cellar is not temperature-controlled and is exposed to the outside environment on two sides.

A cascade of bright cherry, rose buds, lavender and cedar spice wafts up from the whimsically perfumed 2019 Brunello di Montalcino. This is surprisingly juicy yet quite complex, with hints of zesty orange and vibrant acidity that add tremendous energy as crisp clove-inflected red fruits drench the senses. It finishes with cheek puckering tannins, yet they are sweet and round. The 2019 tapers off spicy and fresh, leaving lingering mint, violets and sweet herbal tea notes. Don’t be fooled by its energy and approachability; the 2019 holds a massive amount of power in reserve. This is a spell-binding Brunello from Il Marroneto.
