Caccia al Piano - Bolgheri Superiore

In 2003, Franco Ziliani, co-owner of the iconic Franciacorta House Guido Berlucchi (available in BC), acquired Caccia al Piano in Castagneto Carducci, once the feudal hunting estate of the noble Della Gherardesca family. Now managed by Franco’s children, Cristina - Arturo - Paolo, the estate is composed of 23 hectares, divided into four crus: San Biagio (Cab. Sauvignon and Franc), Le Grottine (Merlot), Cantina (Petit Verdot, Cab. Sauvignon and Franc, Syrah) and Le Bozze (Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc). The proximity to the warming sea breezes and the protective mountains assure near perfect conditions for producing world-class grapes.

Organic - 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc. Meticulous selection of the best grapes from the high density planted San Biagio vineyard. This organically farmed vineyard is the largest of the estate with 12 hectares, planted on top of the hill at 210m of altitude. Exposure is South East and South West, divided in 7 plots, The soil is composed of clay and limestone. Hand harvested. Vinified and aged separately twelve months in French oak barrels (50% new). The cuvée is then blended, and aged 12 months in larger barrels. After bottling, a further 6 months of refinement in the bottle gives the wine harmony and elegance. The total production for the 2018 vintage was around 13,000 bottles.

This wine comes from the San Biagio vineyard, a plot at altitude (210 metres above sea level) close to Castiglioncello di Bolgheri from which comes the historical cru of Sassicaia and its outstanding grapes. Crimson, restrained bramble fruit on the nose with the tension of red cherry, the wine is well composed, shows mid palate extraction with tight yet ripe tannins and brilliant integrated acidity. Good on the finish mostly for its youth character it will develop more complexity with bottle ageing. A wine to follow.
